Pat Summerall - MobyGames
Pat Summerall (full name George Allen Summerall) was born in Lake City, Florida on May 10, 1930. Summerall was a former football player, both college and professional, playing for the University of Arkansas from 1949-1951, graduating in 1953. He was originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1952, but a broken arm kept him from playing. He was traded in 1953 to the Chicago Cardinals and played until 1957 and then played for the New York Giants until he retired in 1961.
After his football career he then went into broadcasting originally for the Giants games then was hired by CBS in 1964 and called a variety of both football games among other sporting events including ABA (American Basketball Association). In 1981 he was teamed up with John Madden which became a staple in both football telecasts as well as many Madden video games years later.
In 1994 he and Madden was hired by the Fox Network where they continued until after Super Bowl XXXVI when he announced his retirement. He returned in 2002 for regional Fox broadcasts with Brian Baldinger where he once again retired at the end of the season, but did sporadic work with Fox from 2006 to 2011 including NFL games and the Cotton Bowl in 2007.
He participated in many of Madden's football games from the mid-1990's to 2002 but also lent his voice to other non-Madden games including NFL Instant Replay. For the last several years of his life he suffered numerous medical conditions including a liver transplant, cataract surgery, hip surgery and internal bleeding. He passed away from cardiac arrest on April 16, 2013, while having surgery to repair a broken hip. Summerall was 82 years old.
